POST RUT ADVENTURE – STAGS & CHAMOIS

Earlier this year I received an email from a chap by the name of Nathan Kimpton, a keen sambar hunter from across the ditch. He had some time off during May and was interested to know a little about red stags and chamois hunting during this time. May is a fantastic month for hunting, good weather, stags feeding up again and the chamois starting to rut; it really is a prime time to be in the hills. MVI_4307.MP4.Still020After exchanging a few emails Nathan was keen on a true blue New Zealand hunting adventure. This meant 5 days with packs on our backs covering as much country as possible to find him a stag and possibly a chamois. This hunt was to be a wilderness hunt on public land; the ultimate kiwi hunt and also the hardest. It was bloody good to see that not everyone wants to shoot stags behind a fence and some are still keen on the “hunt” rather than the “kill”.

With a plan hatched Nathan was to fly over into Christchurch International Airport where I would pick him up and head into the Canterbury high country in search of some kiwi trophies for him to take home. We had an awesome week chasing our quarry although I won’t go into too much written detail as everything is in the video below for you to watch. MVI_4307.MP4.Still009Although numbers weren’t high and we saw the same animals on numerous occasions, we knew that this was the draw card of public land hunting and we had some great weather. Nathan got the job done after many miles of walking by shooting himself a nice 11 pointer and a good representative chamois buck.

This was a typical public land hunt, no guarantees of success but that’s the way I like it. It’s an adventure with never the same outcome and the main reason I keep coming back for more. Below are a few of the photos from our trip and the video for those keen to watch this hunt unfold.

Happy Hunting – Ben
